Your attic should not be an oven
In July, a poorly insulated attic can top 140 degrees. That heat does damage. It bakes your shingles from below. It pushes into your rooms. It makes your AC run for its life.
How heat hurts the roof
Shingles age faster when cooked from both sides. The sun beats down from above. The attic blasts heat from below. Roofs over hot attics wear out years sooner.
Ice dams in winter
Here is the winter version. Heat escapes through thin insulation and warms the roof deck. Snow on the roof melts. Water runs down to the cold eave and refreezes. That ice ridge is an ice dam.
Dams trap water behind them. The water backs up under shingles and into your home. Stained ceilings after a snow are the classic sign.
The fix is the same both seasons
Seal the air leaks. Insulate to full depth. Vent the attic right. A cool attic in summer is a cold attic in winter, and both protect the roof.
Ventilation matters here. Soffit vents let cold air in low. Ridge vents let warm air out high. That flow keeps the roof deck cold in winter so snow does not melt from below.
What does not work
Heated cables melt channels but do not fix the cause. Raking snow helps the symptom. Chipping ice damages shingles. Fix the attic and the dams stop forming.
